The Blind Seer and the Wise Ass

Summary of the Balaam Story

In the Bible (primarily Numbers 22-24), Balac, King of Moab, fears the advancing Israelites and hires the prophet Balaam from Pethor to curse them, believing his words hold power. God initially forbids Balaam from going, but later allows it with strict instructions to only speak what God commands. On the journey, Balaam's donkey repeatedly swerves to avoid an angel with a drawn sword blocking the path, leading Balaam to beat it. Miraculously, the donkey speaks, rebuking Balaam for his cruelty, and the angel reveals itself, warning Balaam to obey God. Upon meeting Balac, Balaam offers sacrifices but, instead of cursing Israel, blesses them multiple times, praising their strength and righteousness. Despite Balac's anger, Balaam remains faithful to God's will. Later references in Deuteronomy, Joshua, Nehemiah, Micah, 2 Peter, Jude, and Revelation highlight Balaam's role, often as a caution against greed or false prophecy.

Why It's Important to Us at Wise Ass Farms

This story inspires our farm's name, "Wise Ass," drawn from the donkey (or "ass") that demonstrated wisdom by speaking truth, protecting its master, and ultimately guiding Balaam toward righteousness despite his initial mercenary intentions. It symbolizes resilience, humility, and divine insight in unexpected forms—qualities we embody in our regenerative farming practices. Just as the donkey challenged conventional expectations, we honor our heritage land (granted for Revolutionary War service) by shifting from traditional methods to sustainable, low-input approaches like rotational grazing with Dexter cattle and composting. This biblical tale reminds us to stay true to ethical stewardship, reducing environmental harm while producing nutrient-dense products, and "speaking" wisdom through community education on self-sufficiency and soil health. It's a nod to our veteran roots, emphasizing discipline and purpose in revitalizing the land for future generations.
